The relationship between Westminster and the UK energy industry has changed substantially over the last decade or so. Ten years ago, the energy concerns of the newly elected Labour government were largely to do with the growth in gas-fired generation and retail competition. A few years later, on the back of reports that generators had increased power prices to pay for Labour's "windfall tax", Labour instigated a review, and the replacement, of the electricity trading arrangements known as the Pool. Less than five years ago, it announced an energy strategy that had renewables and energy efficiency at its heart - a policy that was substantially revised last year. Such vacillations have unnerved some in the energy industry. However, there are recent signs that the government now seems to be less keen to impose radical changes on the industry - for instance, on the issue of nuclear build it now seeks to remove barriers rather than radically alter the market to encourage companies to come forward and build nuclear stations. Dr Simon Skillings has seen how Labour has shifted its approach towards the energy sector since it has been in power. Dr Dominic Maclaine asked him whether he thinks that Labour has provided a stable enough framework for companies, such as his, to invest significant sums of money in new power stations.
