Late last month the UK Government put its new planning bill before parliament. The bill should make it easier for energy companies to build power plants, transmission networks and gas storage facilities. Under the legislation, which will now make its way through the parliamentary process, projects of national importance, such as power stations, will in future have their planning applications judged not by local councils but by a national planning commission, an independent body that will take account of the national interest.
