A call to build two new nuclear reactors in the UK at Sellafield, West Cumbria is set to be made next month by the local council. At the Energy Choices 2007 conference in London this month, Sellafield councilor David Moore, chairman of the West Cumbria site stakeholder group, told Platts that Copeland Borough Council is to put forward plans to the UK Government for two new reactors at the site. It has commissioned consultant AMEC to build the business case for new nuclear build. "We are hoping that there will be a government announcement on January 8 for new build and that will set the criteria for site selection," he said. "Hopefully then we will be able to put forward a submission." The government has been consulting this year on whether to allow a new generation of nuclear power plants to be built.
