The UK Government has decided to shelve plans to modify the Renewables Obligation to support all kinds of energy from waste (EFW) plants. In a new publication, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) says that support will only be given to biomass plants and combined heat and power (CHP) EFW plants, but not energy generated from mixed wastes. Support will be given to biomass plants and combined heat and power EFW plants, but energy from mixed wastes at incinerators. The decision has been made following concerns that any rule change could interact with existing caps on co-firing and a lowered purity requirement for biomass and create a potentially perverse incentive to segregate wastes before burning them.
