When the electricity industry was privatised more than fifteen years ago, a number of competing generation companies were created out of the Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB). The bulk of the generation assets were placed in two companies - initially dubbed as Big Gen and Little Gen in the pre-privatization plans. Thankfully these two companies were given the more memorable monikers of National Power and Powergen when the industry was privatised. Over the years, through forced divestment, takeovers and vertical integration, the two companies no longer dominate the UK generation market - being just two of the six large vertically integrated power companies generating and retailing electricity to UK consumers. Chief executive Andy Duff has overseen many of the changes at National Power, now RWE Npower. Dr Dominic Maclaine asked him what his concerns are about the future.
