After nearly seven years since full domestic electricity retail competition was introduced, switching energy supplier can still yield savings and keep suppliers on their toes. However, rising prices in the retail energy markets over the last few years has taken some of the shine of the UK's energy liberalization model. Although the system was set up to encourage customer switching, only a small proportion of customers switch again and again, and, incredibly, more than half have yet to switch at all. So far price has been virtually the only reason cited by customers for switching supplier. Unlike other markets, such as telephony, technology innovation is virtually non-existent with products such as 'smart metering' foundering in a regulatory quagmire. However, change may be forced upon the industry sooner than expected thanks to the current energy review and a new European Union Directive.
