Renewables and particularly intermittent renewables such as wind and wave power will have an increasing role in the overall electricity generation mix of the country, contributing to overall security of supply reducing reliance upon imported fuels and contributing to the UK's targets on emissions reductions. However, much of the renewable resource is located away from the large demand areas and so significant investment will be required to both connect and transport the electricity generated. So is it time to look at the other options to use our intermittent renewable resources locally? A number of small scale projects are currently demonstrating this. For instance, in Utsira Norway, a project has been underway since July 2004 to provide the electricity requirements to 10 homes using a wind-hydrogen system and on the northern islands of Shetland (Unst), a community owned off-grid renewable hydrogen system is providing energy to a local business park and hydrogen fuel for a fuel cell car. The next logical step is to develop projects to demonstrate the viability of these systems on a much larger scale. In the following article, Gareth Swales, Michael Wagner and Suilven Weatherhead look at a decentralised model for intermittent renewable generation on a larger scale than has been demonstrated previously and determines whether such a system is economically viable.
