Last December, the European Parliament approved the Energy End-Use Efficiency and Energy Services Directive (December 2005). The directive could force a rethink on issues such as advanced (so-called 'smart') metering, says Dr Howard Porter. The European Parliament's milestone announcement last December was followed this February by a major consultation exercise on smart metering, launched by OFGEM. With energy efficiency high on the UK Government (and public) agenda, and consumers becoming more billing price savvy, both developments represent the biggest yet opportunity for the adoption of better metering throughout the UK.
