The 4GW Drax coal-fired power station in the north of England supplies some 7% of the UK's electricity needs. However, it has suffered a turbulent couple of years. The failure of its previous owner, AES, and TXU Europe to renegotiate a large offtake contract for the plant helped trigger the latter's demise and led to an uncertain few months for Drax. Last year, AES stepped away from the plant leaving its fate to a new management team and the banks and other financiers who now own the plant. Just before Christmas, a new restructuring package was agreed and with wholesale power prices up on the previous year, the future of Drax seems to be looking rosier than it has for some time. Dominic Maclaine asked its chief executive about Drax's recovery and his plans for the future.
