Over recent years, with a collapse in market prices for electricity persisting as far out as the eye could see, developers turned their attention to the renewables market. But will the huge number of proposals turn into real projects and will the prices for such "green" power (currently around four times the value of the electricity) persist? In the following article Dr Peter Bedson sets out the issues at stake. The rush to green energy in the UK has its origin in government policy. In order to deliver on its many commitments to reducing emissions of "greenhouse gases", the UK Government introduced a series of policy measures, distorting the market and allowing green energy to attract a very substantial premium.
