The market price for European Union Allowances (EUAs - representing a metric tonne of CO_2) has picked up after months of decline on extremely thin volumes, writes Henry Edwardes-Evans. Quotes for 2005 deliveries of 5,000 metric tonnes CO_2 rose from 6.80-7.10 euro/tonne in April to 8.90-9.50 euro/tonne in May, and reached a bid-offer spread of 9.50-10.50 euro/tonne with one broker on June 16. On the deal front, a trader brokered a deal for 5,000 tonnes CO_2 for vintage 2005 at 8.80 euro/tonne on May 18 and several others reported deals at 9 euro/tonne on the final day of the month. Why the leap? Several participants had come to the same conclusion. One summarized it thus: "the official line is that the EU Commission has bared its teeth by suggesting that several of the NAPs [National Allocation Plans] are overly generous. So the threat of action has pushed up the price. In reality, what we have seen is a single person lifting offers without notice - the volumes are tiny but it was enough to push up the market."
