UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has just placed the environment back at the top of Labour's policy agenda. In a significant speech earlier this month, he flagged up his intention to use the UK's forthcoming presidency of both the G8 and EU to push forward the debate on climate change. Crucially, he also sees the "new green industrial revolution" as a business opportunity for the UK. He said that "British scientists, innovators and business people can lead the world in ways to grow and develop sustainably". But as many cynics know a headline grabbing Prime Ministerial speech and dull reality are often uncomfortable bedfellows if not perfect strangers to each other. It is true that this government is pushing the environmental cause like no other but as yet UK plc is seeing mostly costs and few of the benefits of this green zeal. Take for example the Renewables Obligation which has lead to an unprecedented spurt in new wind farms that are set, on the most part, to be built with kit provided by foreign companies- effectively channelling significant funds from UK consumers to companies overseas. However, some think that, although it has lost the wind race, the UK could still become a global leader in marine energy technology. Dr Dominic Maclaine asked the managing director of a UK wave firm whether this was just pie in the sky?
