The unique characteristics of electricity markets provide suppliers with strong incentives to physically vertically integrate. In the following article Jose A Lopez~* examines the need for physical vertical integration within the context of recent developments in the UK electricity market. In the early days of utility liberalisation, vertical integration was seen by many as a mean by which a firm could extract rents from otherwise competitive activities. In some circles it was argued that if electric utilities were not fully physically deintegrated the benefits of deregulation could fail to materialise.
