British Energy says that outages at two of its nuclear power stations have boosted its half-year pre-tax losses to £234 million - nearly four times the £60 million of losses recorded for the same period last year. BE has failed to reap the benefits of higher wholesale prices since it has locked in sales under contracts that cover virtually all of its output. The average price for these fixed price contracts is £21.00/MWh. For 2005/2006, contracts are in place for approximately two-thirds of planned generation, BE said, with half of these at fixed prices of about £25/MWh. However, because of the outages at Hartlepool and Heysham-1, BE has had to buy power at high prices in the wholesale market to meet its contractual obligations.
