Welcome readers to this issue’scolumn on geophysics applied to theenvironment. This month I describe aninteresting project that I am still workingon with some colleagues from FlindersUniversity.Back in 2017 we were awarded aGeoscientists without Borders (GWB)grant from the SEG for a project in Laos.One of the interesting things aboutGWB grants is that they can’t just bestraight research, they have to (a) beon a project that is directly applicableand beneficial to a real-world problem,and (b) must include local communityinvolvement, local student involvement,and government involvement. All ofwhich we did in spades – we wantedto introduce a number of geophysicaltechniques that could be applied tohydrogeological problems to professorsand their students from local universities,as well as to government scientistsinvolved in groundwater work.
