Since 2007, pocono modern has expanded its reach from designing modern homes into a full-scale design company, all while sticking to their aesthetic roots. Card players themselves, Pocono Modern creative director/graphic designer Joe Morelli and founder Kraig Kalashian drew influence from the woodland animals in their neck of the woods in Pennsylvania to rethink a traditional deck-and create a functional and unique product. As both are self-described "mid-century modern enthusiasts," their Kickstarter-funded Woodland Deck is reminiscent of children's illustrations and matchbook covers from the early '50s. "For the jacks, kings and queens, I began with illustrations reflecting the idealized nuclear American family, but I felt that it needed something fresh," Morelli says. "We landed on some of the most iconic wildlife of the American Northeast, namely the woodland animals of the Pocono Mountain region in Pennsylvania. The bear seemed to be the obvious choice for the king for its size, power and visual boldness; the fox as the queen for its association with femininity; the deer as the jack, being the most familiar animal of the region; and the raccoon as the joker for its mischievous reputation. There were mock-ups of other animals, but these just felt right."
