摘要

While living in Dubai in 2004, Nadine Chahine, the Arabic specialist for Linotype, was struck by multinational commercial logos that were adapted into Arabic using chopped-up, collaged pieces of the logo's original Latin characters, rather than an Arabic script, to create Arabic letterforms. "I call them Frankensteins," explains Chahine. The United Arab Emirates' bilingual policy requires the logos of international companies to appear in both English and Arabic; one unintended consequence is that designers are trying to maintain the same essence of the original logo without fully understanding the intricacies of Arabic script. For example, the letterforms, as seen in The Body Shop's Arabic logo (above, left), are structurally wrong. The Dal should extend above the top of the nearby Beh and tilt slightly to the left. The Waw is too small and out of proportion with the rest of the characters.
