On a hazy Saturday afternoon in West Hollywood, at the seedy end of Melrose, a nondescript storefront has been transformed into a cultural department store. Inside, a hundred young Angelenos are hanging out, and the scene is chill: In a giant sandbox, tanned, bean-thin models in Ashley Paige bikinis strike droll poses; through a doorway, a trio of masked Mexican wrestlers mug for a photo shoot. In one corner, Anthony Kiedis, the Red Hot Chili Pepper, talks with Ryan Kimmel, a surfing star; in another, Andrew Andrew, identical (but non-twin) DJs, spin Ventures and MC Solaar. There are performance artists and PlayStation games; the walls are hung with art by Neck Face and Deanna Templeton. Out back, past the cafe, kids lounge on couches, play foosball, enjoy hot dogs from the grill and soy desserts from the ice-cream truck. As often happens in L. A., beautiful people are everywhere.
