The interview with Fiona Hill, one of the authors of the book The Siberian Curse, that we published in the last issue of Ekspert (see "The Cost of the Cold" [Tsena kholoda, pp. 8-15 of this issue]) evoked polar responses from readers. In the opinion of some, the observations of Hill and her co-author Clifford Gaddy are speculative and farfetched. In the opinion of others, the American authors have correctly noticed disproportions in the distribution of population and productive forces that have a negative impact on Russia's competitive position on the world market. In general, the range of readers' opinions was just as wide as the range of temperatures in Yakutsk or Bratsk, where they descend in January to -40 degrees C or below and rise in summer to +35 degrees C.
