摘要

During the past year, the world has seen several notable examples of the application of structural mechanics in civil engineering practice, perhaps the most extravagant being the beautiful and functional stadium produced for the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing. The design and construction of modern infrastructure such as sports stadia and music venues offer very interesting engineering challenges to civil engineers, especially when the client is keen on aesthetically adventurous solutions. Computational mechanics has played a major role in facilitating advances in architectural engineering, with the finite- element method having perhaps the greatest impact of the analysis techniques available.
