There are over 4 million km of buried assets in the UK, and many organisations require information about these assets. Every year in excess of 4 million holes are dug in UK roads to work on the assets below the surface; the utilities need to know what else is there besides their own pipes or cables. Highway authorities need to know what lies below their roads before they carry out any work, and other organisations such as developers and planners need to know what services are where. One water company reported that they receive over 500 enquiries a day from planners, on top of the enquiries from highway and utility organisations. Most of those who require information about what lies beneath our streets would agree that a nationwide utility one-call system would be extremely beneficial to the UK economy. At the moment however, that information is provided in a variety of ways with paper maps or digital facsimiles such as a PDF or JPG image being the most common means of providing information. Imagine if information from all the utilities was available from one single portal using a standard format specifically designed for the different types of users. Visualising integrated information on buried assets to reduce streetworks (Vista) has the potential to make this vision a reality.
