The TATE rainfall-runoff model is a response function technique with an approximate basis in physical catchment processes. Recent developments are described, particularly with respect to the efficient description of variable catchment response velocities, the derivation and generalization of area-distance relationships, and the improvement in definition of the hydrological setting. Practical performance in three contrasting UK situations is assessed with respect to flow series, flow duration and flood frequency estimation.
