The North Morecambe gas field which came on stream in October 1994 with a total cost of £600 million is the largest single capital investment made by British Gas in recent years. The field, with reserves of 30 billion m~3 (1.06 trillion ft~3), is characterized by a shallow reservoir with a high level of inert gases. The development comprises a single, normally unmanned platform linked by a 38 km long, 914 mm diameter pipeline to a new terminal at Barrow-in-Furness. The terminal incorporates plant for both carbon dioxide and nitrogen removal and is the most process-intensive reception facility in the UK. This paper describes the process technology applied to achieve the required ' sales gas' characteristics and the project execution strategy. The development was approved in April 1991 and required a 42-month schedule for construction and commissioning. Studies estimated three million man-hours for construction trades which required an innovative and flexible approach to the construction works.
