Gold (Au) nanoparticles have unique optical, electrical, and magnetic properties that are largely determined by parameters such as particle shape, size, structure, and composition. But maintaining exact control over these parameters during the particle manufacturing process remains a challenge for researchers. Huifeng Qian et al. (pp. 696-700) report the synthesis of Au nanoparticles with a precise atomic composition of 333 Au atoms and 79 thiolate groups. The authors first reacted chloroauric acid with phenyl-ethylthiol to generate nonuniformly sized Au nanoparticles, which were heated and washed to yield stable, uniformly sized particles.
