Polyelectrolytes-or charged polymers-serve as tissue substitutes, models for complex biological systems such as DNA and protein binding, and aid in industrial applications including water purification and mineral recovery. Though researchers have studied polyelectro-lytes in water solutions for decades, the molecules' behavior at a fluid surface remains unclear. Daniel Beaman et al. (pp. 3226-3231) noted that polyelectrolyte applications often depend on interactions between surface molecules, and explored the behavior of two common polyelectrolytes at the interface between a water solution and a layer of oil.
