Most flowering plants form symbioses with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi to gain additional access to phosphate in the soil. We address the unexplained mechanism by which plant cells send the required phosphate transporters exclusively to the interface with these fungi.To investigate this process, we observed live plant cells expressing marked phosphate transporters at different times during symbiosis. We found that secretion becomes polarized, such that many transporters are sent to the host-microbe interface simply because their synthesis is coincident with development of the special membrane. This surprising result suggests a far greater degree of specials zation in these cells than previously assumed.
