People often look toward the eyes when viewing another human's face (1). Although this behavior imparts positive social value in many cultures (2), its functional role in basic perceptual tasks, such as person identification, remains unclear. Here, we investigated the hypothesis that fixating near the eye region maximizes the ability to make critical judgments about a person's identity, emotional state, and gender. We first show that when humans are forced to fixate away from the preferred points of fixation, their accuracy in these perceptual tasks decreases.
