Plenty of mysteries lurk beneath the Earth's surface. Roberta Rudnick, a Distinguished University Professor and chair of the department of geology at the University of Maryland (College Park, MD) and recently elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, has plumbed these depths. In her Inaugural Article, Rudnick presents a mass balance model for lithium isotopes, used to track chemical weathering on our planet's surface (1).Her work has been honored with the Dana Medal from the Mineralogical Society of America and the NX. Bowen Award from the American Geophysical Union. Rudnick is also a fellow of five scientific organizations as well as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
