摘要

Plant-derived fuel has received much attention in recent years as a possible source of alternative energy. To economically produce fuels such as ethanol, microbes must be capable of fermenting the simple and complex saccharides, such as glucose, cel-lobiose, and xylose, found in vegetation. Most microbes, however, cannot convert all three of these sugars into useful fuel. Suk-Jin Ha et al. (pp. 504-509) expanded on Saccharomyces cerevisiae's innate ability to ferment glucose by engineering the yeast to express two proteins from a cel- lulolytic fungus: a cellobiose transporter and an enzyme that converts cellobiose to glucose.
