Measuring an organism's lifetime fitness, or ability to reproduce and generate healthy offspring for future generations, is tricky in a natural fluctuating environment because it depends on factors such as mate choice, food availability, and the presence of predators. Peter Grant and Rosemary Grant (pp. 674-679) determined the fitness of two species of Darwin's finches-Geospiza fortis, the medium ground finch, and G. scandens, the cactus finch-that live on the small, isolated Galapagos island of Daphne Major.
