Microbes often interact in complex, multispecies communities. However, deciphering the organization of these communities has proven challenging because current techniques limit the number of taxa that can be labeled and imaged in a single experiment. Alex Valm et al. (pp. 4152-4157) describe a strategy for coupled biological labeling and image analysis that expands the number of microbial signatures that can be simultaneously visualized.
