The mosquito Anopheles gambiae is the major African vector of malaria parasites. Thus far, malaria transmission has been controlled primarily through insect-management strategies. Like all animals, mosquitoes show daily rhythms in behavior and physiology (1); in An. gambiae these rhythms include dusk mating swarms and nocturnal flight activity (Fig. P1), feeding on sugar and on blood-meal hosts, and egg laying. To combat diseases such as malaria, basic understanding of the biology of mosquito vector species is critical to identify novel methods for intervening in transmission, to interpret past experiments, and to design future ones.
