摘要

The Ward Hunt ice shelf, a hulking mass of more than 400 km~2 north of Ellesmere Island, Canada, is the Arctic's largest remaining ice shelf. The disintegration of the shelf during the turn of the 21st century has been linked to recent climate warming in the Arctic. To determine whether the ice shelf collapse and the attendant loss of Arctic ice reflected environmental conditions outside the range of natural variability, Dermot Antoniades et al. (pp. 18899-18904) analyzed signatures in sediment cores from the Disraeli Fiord, whose fluctuating states reflect those of the shelf, which sits at the Fiord's mouth, and reconstructed the buildup and breakdown of the shelf over geological time.
