Emergence of formal ritual architecture such as shrines and temples within ancient cultures is commonly associated with the rise of complex societies, which some theories of cultural evolution posit evolves slowly, over several centuries. Warren Sharp et al. (pp. 13234-13239) dated corals used to build ritual structures in Central Polynesia before the arrival of European explorers and found that the society appears to have evolved rapidly over a period of 140 years.
