Based on an 18-year field study of the makeup and dynamics of submerged aquatic vegetation, researchers have found that restoration efforts have improved the water quality of the Potomac River, a major tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. The bay's submerged aquatic vegetation, which harbors habitats for invertebrates, fish, and waterfowl, has long been threatened by several agents, including effluent discharges into rivers.rnDespite ongoing efforts to restore habitats and ecosystems in the bay-a watershed spanning six states-a bay-wide improvement of water quality and a rise in the abundance of beneficial plant species have remained elusive.
