PNAS classifies research articles into three broad categories-physical, biological, and social sciences-with subcategories that correspond to traditional discipline-specific subject areas. Edoardo Airoldi et al. (pp. 20899-20904) evaluate how well the journal's indexing scheme represents modern interdisciplinary research in the biological sciences. The authors analyzed text from PNAS abstracts and references for latent categories using a statistical machine learning approach known as mixed-membership analysis.
