Certain stem cell types have been found to selectively identify particular tumors. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), for example, target tumor cells, including those that occur in glioblas-toma multiforme, an extremely aggressive type of brain cancer for which the median survival time is less than a year. Because MSCs are amenable to transduction with viral vectors, the cells represent potent antitumor weapons. Laura Sasportas et al. demonstrate the potential of using MSCs against gliomas in a mouse model. The authors used different lines of human glioma cells that express a receptor for TRAIL, a cytokine that induces apoptosis via caspase signaling.
