A series of naturally occurring chemical reactions may be creating reactive chlorine compounds and chlorine atoms in the air, researchers have found. Jonathan Raff et al. discovered that air-rnborne hydrogen chloride reacts with nitrogen oxides and releases compounds that photolyze to generate highly reactive chlorine atoms. Hydrogen chloride is generated by burning garbage, biomass, or coal, and from industrial and natural processes, including reactions of sea salt in coastal areas and around dry salt lakes. Nitrogen oxides, produced by combustion, are usually present at the same time.
