Connexin proteins form cell-to-cell channels, called gap junctions, which allow molecules to pass directly from the interior of one cell to another and also serve as a physical substrate for electrical and metabolic intercellular signalling. Nicolas Pala-cios-Prado and Feliksas Bukauskas found that gap junctions formed between cells that express different connexin proteins can exhibit asymmetric electrical cell-to-cell signalling and metabolic communication.
