This month???s article takes a look at how Robert A. Millikan???s oil-drop experiment led to the measurement of the charge of an electron. A hundred years ago physicist Robert A. Millikan published his paper on the value of Planck???s constant ??h??, which he used to prove Albert Einstein???s photoelectric equation. Seven years later, in 1923, Millikan received the Nobel Prize for this work. Perhaps more than any other number, h symbolizes the rise of modern physics.
