Jay W. Forrester (born July 14, 1918) grew up on a ranch in western Nebraska, where his parents were the original homesteaders. He earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska in 1939 and a Master's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1945, both in electrical engineering. During World War II he worked in the MIT Servomechanism Laboratory, where he designed and built a servo that stabilized radar antennae on naval ships. Although a civilian, Forrester volunteered to serve on the aircraft carrier Lexington, where the prototype was installed, to ensure the servo (and thus the ship's radar) worked, and saw action near the Marshall Islands during which the Lexington was torpedoed.
