1 We want to see plans to boost productivity and accelerate growth. The UK has many world-leading businesses, but also many poorly managed and unproductive organisations. CMI has long argued that closing this gap means recognising the pivotal role of management in boosting productivity and a national focus on replacing our 2.4 million 'accidental managers' with competent, confident, conscious leaders. It's great to see policymakers now supporting CMI's position that management skills are key to boosting productivity. The Bank of England cites a lack of management quality as an explanation for the UK's poor productivity, and the Office for National Statistics, when scoring UK companies on management effectiveness, found that improving that score by 0.1 per cent was linked to a rise of almost ten per cent in productivity. Indeed, the government's own industrial strategy highlights the importance of management skills in closing the productivity gap. This consensus needs to be backed up by hard actions to drive up the number and standard of managers and leaders.
