It's 7am on Monday 2 September 2030. There's a 9am in-office videoconference and you need to be there, sharp. Your usual commute is too risky - there have been strikes - so you summon an autonomous taxibot on your smartphone. It arrives in seconds. Easing into the seat, you switch on the monitors built into the windows and hammer the armrest keyboard as the car glides silently towards the centre of town. There's little traffic - it's amazing the way connected, self-driving cars find the quickest routes - and before you reach what used to be called The Smoke (so much cleaner now, with all these electric cars) you've not only prepared your presentation but also found time to dash off a couple of memos. You would never have achieved this much work on the train or in your old company car.
