It's hard to convey the sense of horror as a cyclist veers into the path of 'my' Volkswagen Passat as it speeds along the tarmac. It might only be a dummy but, as I've been ordered to take my hands off the steering wheel and foot off the brake, I'm nervous. Very nervous. Just as my right leg begins to twitch, the brakes automatically activate, the car slams to a violent halt and the cyclist continues on his way unharmed. I've just experienced autonomous emergency braking (AEB) at Bosch's proving ground in Boxberg, Germany.
