How do you think leadership needs to change in the 21st century? julia unwin (ju): There's a style of leadership that's probably useful if you're leading men into war. However, it's not remotely appropriate if you're trying to get people either to interact with the public or to unleash their creativity. I fear that much of our management training and leadership thinking are still locked in that old paradigm where you're asking people to do the impossible in ways that require absolute direction and certainty. We're also asking people to do that in what is a period of massive complexity, when the available data and people's expectations are constantly changing. dame vivian hunt (vh): Last century was about the creation of the managerial class. As we brought people out of fragmented agricultural work into a structured work system, we needed managers to organise and structure their work, pay schedules and so on. In today's technological revolution, however, it's not guaranteed that managers will add value. It's important, therefore, that we make the positive case for good management and leadership.
