When calculating risk reduction based on severity-frequency-likelihood equations, some OSH professionals overestimate the risk reduction achieved based on overvaluation of the control implemented to manage a specific risk by overvaluing the respective severity reduction achieved. OSH professionals must clearly understand the effects of the controls we put in place (as identified on a hierarchy of controls) on overall risk reduction through their effects on severity. Only with an accurate understanding of risk can OSH professionals adequately protect workers.
