I am very supportive of having a public director with a business background on ASSE's board of directors (PS, Jan. 2016, p. 6). Rand McNally can perhaps bring some business of safety insight into the public image of ASSE. Here are two possible opportunities: 1) Several years ago at ASSE's Executive Summit, one CEO panelist responded to a question seeking advice for OSH professionals in the audience: "We know that you know safety. We need for you to know us." I am confident that this panelist's assessment of and wishes about OSH professionals is not unique to him alone. Many ASSE members understand what this CEO was saying. The question is, What did/does this statement mean to ASSE as the collective voice of OSH professionals? How should it affect our public advocacy, what we say about OSH professionals and our management team in public? 2) That then leads to this question: What does ASSE say in public advocacy for OSH professionals and our employer customers? Our public advocacy is mostly about OSHA and its regulatory proposals. Little to none is about OSH professionals and our management team customers. Reading what ASSE says in public, business leaders could hardly see OSH professionals other than as extensions of OSHA.
