A NIOSH fact sheet warns against using aftermarket accessories and replacement parts that are not NIOSH-approved for the specific respirator. The use of components that are not part of the approved assembly results in a respirator that has not been NIOSH evaluated and certified, and thereby compromises worker safety, the agency says. The fact sheet explains that this holds true even for parts that are supplied by the original equipment manufacturer, if those parts were not evaluated by NIOSH as part of the respirator. Respirators that were not evaluated may not function at the expected level of protection, the agency says.
