A final rule issued by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requires that heavy trucks and large buses be equipped with electronic stability control (ESC) systems to ensure safety. Calling ESC "a technology innovation that is already saving lives in passenger cars and light trucks," U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx says that the final rule will increase safety for the drivers, passengers and all road users. DOT reports that ESC works instantly and automatically to maintain control in direction when the driver's steering and braking will not work quickly enough to prevent a crash.
