The safety and engineering professions need leaders, yet the academic community is still preparing managers. The author's research suggests that students entering the safety and engineering professions are underprepared on research-based leadership models even though they recognize the need to understand leadership in the workplace (Winn, et al., 2013). Leadership seminars and training often present distilled wisdom rather than empirical information.
